The following glossary is a list of specialist words used on this website, and their definitions in the context of the Jenny Biancardi Consultancy and its services.
- Action techniques
- Using action to express something – rather than just talking about it – can give clarity and immediacy, which can lead to insight and a quicker effective resolution.
- British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
- The BACP is the governing body which registers and monitors qualified counsellors and psychotherapists.
- British Psychodrama Association (BPA)
- The BPA is the governing body which registers and monitors qualified psychodramatists.
- Coaching
- See Mentoring and Coaching definition.
- Congruence
- A speaker is being congruent when they are visible, transparent and authentic. This provides a more genuine communication and experience, and it can transform relationships.
- Counselling and Psychotherapy
- Counselling and psychotherapy are terms which are often used interchangeably, and both refer to the process of the therapeutic relationship providing emotional support and help, and facilitating change. Both have the same aims, but psychotherapy is sometimes seen as being a longer-term and more intensive process.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
- EMDR is a psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress, recommended by NICE guidelines. It can also be used for panic attacks, phobias, obsessive behaviour, and clearing past destructive experiences. EMDR is an effective and relatively quick non-traumatic way of bringing relief.
- Empathy skills
- Empathy is the ability to see the world through the eyes of another - to gain a deep understanding of how their world affects them - without losing your own perspective. To be able to develop and communicate this is life-enhancing, and can radically improve both personal and work relationships.
- Encounter groups
- Encounter groups were first developed by Carl Rogers. The group is facilitated in a way which enables people to say what they really think and feel – both positive and difficult – in a safe and respectful way, owning their own thoughts and feelings as their own. The process clears the air: people feel better, and it helps to produce a more cohesive group with deeper and more positive relationships.
- Experiential learning
- Different people learn in different ways. An experiential component to any training provides the opportunity to try something out – to practice it – rather than to just have the theory. It is used because it makes the training experience more relevant, and it helps to embed the learning.
- Mentoring and Coaching
- In many environments these terms are used interchangeably. One distinction is that mentoring is often seen as having a more work-based focus, while coaching is very much about the whole person and helping you to be more effective in all areas of life. Jenny Biancardi will assess, negotiate and provide what is most beneficial to each individual.
- NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)
- NLP was developed by Bandler and Grinder. It is a collection of ideas and techniques which can help to bring about psychological and emotional change. Some of these techniques (for example, for treating phobias) are very effective and useful.
- Northern School of Psychodrama (NSP)
- The Northern School of Psychodrama is a UKCP-accredited person-centred psychodrama organisation based in the north of the UK, providing psychodrama training and public workshops for personal development. Jenny Biancardi is one of the founding directors.
- Person centred approach
- The Person Centred Approach is a style of therapy developed by Carl Rogers. It is based on a belief that the client ultimately knows best what is right for them and how they need to change or develop to reach their potential. The underlying belief is that people have a self-actualising tendency towards positive growth. In a therapeutic relationship, this tendency will be enhanced by providing the core conditions which include: psychological contact; empathy; congruence; and unconditional positive regard.
- Practicum
- A practical examination of a skill involving a live demonstration.
- Psychodrama
- An action-based technique, based on the work of Jacob Moreno, used in a variety of settings. It allows someone to re-enact a situation to achieve insight and change.
- Psychotherapy
- See Counselling and Psychotherapy definition.
- Therapy
- See Counselling and Psychotherapy definition.
- United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)
- An umbrella organisation providing accreditation and monitoring of a variety of therapeutic organisations.
